The Estivol Association of the Mounts of Blond is proud to present and promote their aerial sports event, comprising ULM (Ultra light motorised machines) Aeromodels, sport and leisure activities like Kites,Montgolfiers (Hot Air_Baloons), in the event of "Air, wind and Wings".

THE 'ULM's at Libarderie:

For further information , contact us

The Base - Libarderie is home to ULM of all classes: paramotors, pendular, multiaxial.

These craft belong to the members of the Estivol Association or the Association itself. Also amongst the club memers of the Freestyle flying Thermal Greens club of Limousin there is a pendular two seated ULM at our disposition.

ULMs must conform with strict rules and regulations of characteristics , technology, speed and autonomy criteria.

This ULM is for Solo flying or for two and is used for maiden flights.

At the same time it allows fans of the Delta to practise with the flight tow.

(The deltawing is towed by ULM up to the desired altitude)

A ULM is an "Aeroknave": Flying apparatus. It can only carry one passenger plus pilot. The term ULM is designated for ultra light motorised gliders. Unlike Air Planes, the ULM can take off and land practically anywhere, and is not dependent on an Airport runway to do so. The traffic regulations are somewhat restricted however for day flights from sunrise to sunset.

In the 1980's, some pilots started branching out with the trend of 'ULM' s and shortly thereafter, in 1984 the Federation of ULM's, was formed by Dimitri Caloussi.

Marc D'Ursel had his first official ULM runway recognised and acepted in Belgium; it was in fact a Hockey pitch on the Farm of Lucien Patriarche, and became the temporary base for the ULMs at Buzet.

The ULMs took off after the matches or at half-time. In January ,1981 a group of pilots met up in Lyon in France and founded the Association FFPULM who in turn held the first French Championships in October 1984, in Millau.

Richard Meredith-Hardy suceeded in flying Londo to the Cape.

Guy Delage crossed the Atlantic.

In 1995, in trials the ULM "Fascination" made flight history by reaching a speed of 260 km/hour.

HISTORY

The ULM is a apparatus, with two places. Otto Lilienthal and The Wright Brothers were the initiators of this invention. The first trials were held in North Carolina in the United States.

The Aeronautics Engineer , Francis Rogallo, worked in various states in America. He invented the "Rogallo Wing " in 1948, which was later patented in 1951. This was a big step and landmark for the future developments.

In 1975,France was won over with this passion and many creations were tested and used by their inventors. (examples: The Motodelta by J.M. Geiser, Mosquito by R. Magallon, Soarmaster by B.Davis). In 1981, three Inventors refined the first two place ULM , which allowed for instruction or pupil training flights to be given.

Does one need a certificate to pilot a ULM ?

Answer: Yes, one does in order to become a ULM Pilot. Depending on what class of ULM, they may vary. The Ministry of Transport Exam consists of the following requirements to be met:

  • Theory: covering different areas of knowledge such as safety, regulations, navigation, weather and air conditions, flight mechanics .

  • Practical: To demonstrate the ability of controlling and manoevring the ULM in its considered classification category.

In addition: In flight test is held by an authorised examiner to check competence or ability to "safely carry a passenger.''

The minimum age to become a Pilot is 15 and 18 to be an Instructor.

The Pilots's certificate can be obtained by a simplified, accelerated process for persons already holding certain Aeronautical Diplomas (Qualified Airline Pilots , Glider Pilots , Helicopter Pilots or similar..).
